Echocardiogram

An Echocardiogram is a non-invasive diagnostic imaging test that uses high-frequency sound waves (ultrasound) to create detailed images of the heart. It allows physicians to evaluate the structure and function of the heart in real time, providing essential information about heart chambers, valves, blood flow, and overall cardiac performance.

Echocardiography is a fundamental tool in the diagnosis, monitoring, and management of a wide range of cardiovascular conditions.

Purpose of an Echocardiogram

An echocardiogram is performed to:

assess heart size, shape, and wall thickness;

evaluate heart pumping function (ejection fraction);

examine heart valve structure and performance;

detect congenital heart defects;

identify heart muscle damage or cardiomyopathy;

evaluate blood flow through the heart using Doppler imaging;

monitor progression of heart disease or response to treatment.

Types of Echocardiograms

Depending on the clinical indication, different types of echocardiograms may be used:

Transthoracic Echocardiogram (TTE) – the most common, performed through the chest wall;

Transesophageal Echocardiogram (TEE) – provides detailed images via the esophagus;

Stress Echocardiogram – assesses heart function during physical or pharmacologic stress;

Doppler Echocardiogram – evaluates blood flow and pressure within the heart;

Contrast Echocardiogram – enhances image clarity in certain cases.

The appropriate type is determined by the physician based on diagnostic needs.

How the Procedure Is Performed

The patient lies comfortably on an examination table.

A water-based gel is applied to the chest area.

A handheld transducer is placed on the chest to transmit and receive ultrasound waves.

Real-time images of the heart are displayed and recorded.

For Doppler studies, blood flow direction and velocity are measured.

The procedure is painless and typically lasts 30–60 minutes.

Preparation and Aftercare

Mild throat discomfort may occur after a TEE and typically resolves quickly.

Safety and Risks

Echocardiography is a very safe procedure with minimal risk. Transesophageal echocardiograms carry a small risk related to sedation or throat irritation, but serious complications are rare.

After the examination, patients receive:

recommendations for further testing, treatment, or follow-up care, if necessary.
