Mammography
Mammography is a highly accurate X-ray diagnostic method used to examine the breast tissue. It is designed for the early detection of benign and malignant changes, including breast cancer at its earliest stages, even before clinical symptoms appear.
Purpose of Mammography
Mammography is considered the gold standard for breast cancer screening and allows physicians to:
detect tumors as small as a few millimeters;
identify microcalcifications, which may be an early sign of malignancy;
evaluate the structure of breast tissue;
diagnose cysts, fibroadenomas, and other benign conditions;
monitor the breast condition after surgery or during ongoing treatment.
Regular mammography significantly increases the chances of early diagnosis and successful treatment of breast cancer.
Who Should Have a Mammogram
Mammography is recommended for:
women over 40 years of age as a preventive screening (typically once every 1–2 years);
women under 40 years of age when prescribed by a physician due to symptoms or risk factors;
patients with a family history of breast cancer;
women experiencing breast lumps, pain, nipple discharge, or changes in breast shape;
follow-up and monitoring of previously detected breast abnormalities.
How the Procedure Is Performed
The examination is carried out using a modern digital mammography system:
The breast is gently positioned and compressed between two specialized plates.
Images are taken in several projections to ensure a comprehensive assessment.
The procedure takes approximately 5–10 minutes.
Radiation exposure is minimal and fully compliant with international safety standards.
Some mild discomfort may occur during compression, but it is brief and harmless.
Advantages of Digital Mammography
high image resolution and diagnostic accuracy;
reduced radiation dose compared to conventional methods;
ability to magnify and digitally process images;
secure electronic storage of results;
rapid interpretation by a qualified radiologist.
Preparation for the Examination
No special preparation is required. However, it is recommended to:
schedule the exam on days 5–12 of the menstrual cycle;
avoid using deodorants, creams, or powders on the breast and underarm areas on the day of the examination;
bring previous mammography or breast imaging results, if available.
Results
Following the examination, the patient receives:
digital mammographic images;
a written radiology report;
recommendations for further evaluation or specialist consultation (breast specialist or oncologist), if necessary.
